Fight Hunger with WHS' Annual 'Empty Bowls'

The annual art- and food-based hunger fundraiser returns later this month.

Local students, parents and community members are invited to enjoy a bowl of locally-made soup, as well as the handcrafted bowl in which it's served, later this month as part of an annual fundraiser focused on combatting hunger in the Seacoast area.

The Winnacunnet High School Art Department's annual "Empty Bowls" fundraiser, a tradition for roughly 15 years, is on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Several local businesses have already agreed to donate soups for the cause, including Las Olas, the Old Salt, Fast Eddie's Diner and the 401 Tavern, according to WHS ceramics teacher Sarah Edgar. Edgar said her students have made a variety of clay bowls for the event, which collects $15 per person for local food pantries and will be held in the school's dining hall.

"As a thank you, participants can select a handmade clay bowl to enjoy their soup and to take home as a reminder that there are always those who face an empty bowl," said Edgar.

In the event of snow, Empty Bowls will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2.
