Voter to Tremblay: 'You Are a F---ing Idiot'

A NH lawmaker's comment about the Boston Marathon bombings being staged has people asking: How did she get elected?

State Rep. Stella Tremblay forwarded one of the hate emails she's received this week to every member of the New Hampshire Legislature. The subject line on the email, written in response to her claim that the Boston Marathon bombings were a "Black Ops 'terrorist' attack" by the U.S. government, read "you are a f---ing idiot."  To Tremblay, the email was "pure Saul Alinsky Tactics in action." But it might as well have come from her fellow Republicans, who have expressed embarrassment and called for an apology. Tremblay says none will be coming. The frustration Republicans are feeling now has been felt on both sides of the aisle in New Hampshire in recent years. And it prompts the question: how does one who even remotely peddles in conspiracy…

i agree with you wholeheartedly Andy... "All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. "At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it…   more ›

Hassan's Inaugural Speech, by Word Cloud

Word frequency shows priorities, promises and challenges in New Hampshire in 2013.

Gov. Maggie Hassan was sworn into office Jan. 3, 2013 as New Hampshire's 81st governor. She delivered an inaugural address thereafter. Although a picture is worth 1,000 words, so they say, Hassan's speech clocked in at 2,888 words, for the record. Here's a "word cloud" of her remarks, based on the frequency of certain words showing up in the text of her prepared remarks.  You can read the full speech here. Some of the words appearing most frequently are: people, work, businesses, education, citizens, innovation, government and community. What word or words would you use to describe the Granite State's priorities and/or the work ahead?

NH 'Personality of the Year'

This person made headlines in 2012, inspiring and confounding and damning the torpedoes.

Burrow through the 2012 archives for year-in-review stories and one name keeps cropping up. Instead of a "Person of the Year," this file search steered NH Patch editors more toward a "Personality of the Year." And that personality is William L. O'Brien. The former House Speaker (R-Mont Vernon) wielded the gavel for one term, but it was a vital, memorable term. He inspired some Republicans and Tea Party members and infuriated opponents. He emerged as a Mel Thomson-like Speaker of the House. He began with a focus on limited government and low taxes and soon became a lightning rod for a canopy of issues – economic and social. "To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, be nothing," as the wisdom goes. That very quote has been on display …

Seamus, as it was explained in the story, Personality of the Year is not the same as Person of the Year. "It reflects the definition of personality...'the quality of being a unique person.'"   more ›

Hampton Police Reflect on 'Overwhelming Honor' of Helping Boy with Cancer

Two Hampton officers share firsthand experiences from their long trip to brighten a child's Christmas.

Hampton-North Hampton Patch has been following the efforts of two local Hampton Police Department members to fulfill the Christmas wish of an inspirational young boy, and we want to share with you exactly what that experience was like for the officers. The officers, along with over 250 individuals from a variety of law enforcement agencies from all over New England, delivered gifts Thursday morning to Nathan Norman, a 6-year-old Rustburg, Va., boy with a rare brain cancer and an inoperable tumor on his spine. The attached photos and video were taken by a Hampton detective on the trip, who has asked to remain anonymous for selfless reasons. That detective, who along with the other Hampton officer picked up a Los Angeles Police Department …

The officers made the 10-hour, 627-mile trek to Rustburg, Va., to lift the spirits of 6-year-old Nathan Norman, who has been diagnosed with brain cancer and earlier this year asked for his heroes — police officers, firefighters and EMTs — to send him cards, letters, patches and anything with a first responder insignia. The above Storify captures some amazing pictures and videos of the officers' gesture, including numerous social media posts from the various officers themselves. NH Again Named One of Healthiest States in US

Continued low crime and poverty rates helped New Hampshire maintain a favorable ranking.

The Granite State may have dropped one spot from last year's rankings, but New Hampshire is still one of the healthiest states in the country according to the United Health Foundation’s annual America’s Health Rankings, which were released Tuesday. New Hampshire ranks third this year, falling from the No. 2 spot in the 2011 rankings. Hawaii leapfrogged New Hampshire for second place in 2012. Among the factors that helped the Granite State stay near the top of the national rankings are a low percentage of children in poverty, a low violent criminal rate, a low infant mortality rate and a high rate of high school graduation, according to the 2012 rankings report. Low per capita public health funding and a moderate prevalence of binge …
