Regulatory burdens, fees, legal, and procedural impediments are the hidden costs to small businessesRead More that, in addition to taxes, keep small businesses away from New Hampshire. Genesis 2:7 is clearest. The first human became a "living being" (nefesh hayah, "aRead More living breath") when God blew into its nostrils and it started to breathe. Human life begins when you start breathing, biblical writers thought. It ends when you stop. That's why the Hebrew word often translated "spirit" (ruah) -- "life force" might be a better translation -- literally means "wind" or "breath." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rick-lowery-phd/abortion-what-the-bible-says-and-doesnt-say_b_1856049.html

Exodus 21:22-25 describes a case where a pregnant woman jumps into a fight between her husband andRead More another man and suffers injuries that cause her to miscarry. Injuries to the woman prompt the normal penalties for harming another human being: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life. Killing the woman is murder, a capital crime. The miscarriage is treated differently, however -- as property loss, not murder. The assailant must pay a fine to the husband. The law of a life for a life does not apply. The fetus is important, but it's not human life in the same way the pregnant woman is.

There are so many problems with our public ed system and this is not the place to start. Math andRead More language skills must be taught earlier along with ethics. Until we change the structure of the system it will continue to fail our children.
Deb June 19, 2014 at 03:00 am
@JimC - where are the facts cited that private school provides a better education than publicRead More school? My husband and I are both products of public school systems in Mass and NH. We have both been successful and our 2 children are currently in the Windham high school public school system. They both excel in math (both are above grade level) as well as language skills. They are both capable of making change as well as figuring out what a 20% off sale means while shopping. Even though they have been fortunate to have good math/language teachers, don't you think education begins at home? We have always taken an active role in their education and we have never thought that the responsibility of their success in learning solely lies with their teachers. We have always been their first teachers and we always supplement their learning with real life education at home. Just my thoughts - many families or school systems don't take active roles in their students' education, which is unfortunate.
Donna Westbrook June 20, 2014 at 01:32 pm
Life skills are not taught in school, life skills are taught in life. If one is talking aboutRead More economics, basic math, budgeting, and so forth, some of those things are taught as well. If you are, on the other hand talking about skills one learns through out a lifetime, no on can do that, because that comes over a matter of time, and age, and experience. We must prepare children for the future so when they head out there into the world, they are prepared. A small budgeting tutorial is enough to teach basic budgeting, and can be taught at home, even on the computer. Teaching about saving, and investing, as well, although I think it would not be a bad idea to teach that in the early grades.

Mamie Huggins June 10, 2014 at 07:50 am
Yeah, we definitely need to protect the baby-killers from reality, give them a buffer zone, thatRead More should do it. Since the number is so low, why not replace the murder with adoptions and classes on how to be a "responsible human being." We have an established medical system in this country for "cancer screenings" and "pregnancy PREVENTION," why do we even need Planned Parenthood? Oh that's right...to give free abortions to teenagers.

"we have taken an important step toward improving the health and financial well-being of ourRead More people." What a joke. Do people not pay attention to what someone says. How about taking a real important step and let people buy insurance where ever they want. You can buy Life Insurance from any state, why not buy healthcare from any state? But then again that would only make sense and benefit the "little guy" and not the big one.
Stephen Campbell June 3, 2014 at 12:20 pm
It is better that five insurance companies will be offering, but at one time not that long agoRead More during Gov. Shaheen's term in office there were over 20 insurance companies doing business in NH. Government intervention made most of those firms decide not to offer health insurance in NH. I am one of the thousands of people in NH that were reasonably happy with the health insurance we had before the ACA that have lost their insurance and now forced to go with what the Federal Government has decided is best for us. Maybe they should decide what I wear and what I eat for breakfast. This desire by some people to have government make all their decisions has got to stop. We fought a war to beak away from a king in London, How different is that from politicians and bureaucrats in Washington DC today taxing us and trying to tell us how to live?
Mamie Huggins June 4, 2014 at 07:49 am
So we will have 5 carriers instead of 1 forcing us to purchase medical insurance that we neitherRead More want nor need. Where is the competition in that? Hassan, in a statement, said: "This agreement is fair to the hospitals and to New HampshireRead More taxpayers, bringing stability to our budget while ensuring that our hospitals and the state can continue to provide critical health services to our people. If she truly cared about the taxpayers and wants to be fair, she would not add another program to drain their pockets. I have no problem with taking care of the elderly and sick that have worked all their live long. But, as far as paying for all those lazy low-lives between 18 and 50 that have never worked and contributed, that needs to be addressed and then we would have enough for the truly poor. Unfortunately that is not a priority and on the liberal politicians agenda. They are so eager to gain more power that they can care less how much a taxpayer has to give.
