First Snowfall of the Season Could Hit NH This Week

A coating of snow could be coming for parts of New Hampshire, although it won't hit the Seacoast area.

Parts of New Hampshire could see snow later this week, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain is expected to fall on Wednesday night throughout much of New Hampshire. But in parts–especially up north–it could be cold enough to drop a dusting of snow instead.

"If we do get anything at all, it looks like pretty much the northern half of New Hampshire," said meteorologist Mike Kistner of the National Weather Service in Gray, ME. "Definitely not the Seacoast. You might get a little bit in the southern Connecticut River Valley, but I doubt it'll make it that far south. Most likely Coos, Carroll, Grafton counties, up in that range.

"If we do get anything it might be a coating," he added. "It's not going to be anything significant where you see a couple inches or something like that."

Kistner said no snow is expected to fall in Massachusetts, except maybe in the Berkshires.

While Oct. 23 is a bit early for snow in New Hampshire, it's not unprecedented.

Kistner said the average date of the first measurable snowfall for Concord is Nov. 20, though snow has fallen there as early as Oct. 7.

"It depends," he said. "Some years it comes earlier, some years you don't even see it till Christmas."
