One-Ring Scam Coming to NH?

The new telephone scam is already being reported by some in the area.

Police and the Better Business Bureau are warning residents not to become victims of the "one-ring phone scam."

According to WCVB-TV, the scammers let the phone ring once before hanging up so that a missed call message shows on the phone. Anyone who calls back to find out who it was gets a paid adult entertainment service overseas, resulting in a $20 international call fee.

The Portsmouth Police Department posted a message on its Facebook page on Tuesday warning residents of the scam.

"This scam is nearby and most likely coming to the Portsmouth area," the message from Detective Duane Jacques said. "The way this one works is simple. Someone calls your number and lets it ring once. They hope that your curiosity will get the best of you. If you return the call to an overseas location, you could be billed $20. If you don't know the number, check the number before you call."
