Police ID Men Who Drowned in Hampton River

Autopsy results are in for the bodies of two Hampton men found floating in Hampton River on Friday.

Police have identified the bodies of two men found in Hampton River on Friday.

Hampton police said autopsies for the bodies of Mark E. Classen, 57, and Bruce W. Menezes, 53, both of River Avenue in Hampton, revealed that the cause of death for both men was drowning.

The autopsies were conducted Saturday.

Hampton police have previously ruled the individuals' deaths "untimely." Chief Jamie Sullivan didn't answer questions Friday pertaining to the possible cause of death or the possibility of foul play on Friday because he said they wanted to wait for the autopsy results and the completion of the investigation.

The New Hampshire Chief Medical Examiner's Office couldn't be reached for comment Saturday, and the Hampton Police Department didn't respond to additional inquiries about the case.

Sullivan said the first body was recovered after it was reported floating in the Hampton River near the Hampton River Marina Boat Club on Landing Road around 10:47 a.m. Friday.

A small, private boat was used to recover the body. Sullivan said a second body was recovered around noon that day after officers at the scene noticed the individual floating in the water.

Sullivan declined Friday to speak to how long the bodies were in the water, as well as answer other specific questions about the investigation. No additional details about the case were released Friday or Saturday.

New Hampshire State Police and Marine Patrol assisted in the investigation and recovery of the bodies.

The area was closed off for multiple hours while the agencies investigated the scene.
