Dr. Robert Marchant, Seacoast OB/GYN, Passes Away at 78

Visiting hours will be held Friday in Hampton for Dr. Robert M. Marchant, a longtime Seacoast obstetrician and gynecologist.

Robert M. Marchant, M.D., 78, well known Portsmouth obstetrician and gynecologist, more recently of Stratham, formerly of Rye and New Castle, died Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at his home.

He was born in Norwich, Conn., September 14, 1935 the son of the late John and Sophia C. (McMillan) Marchant.

Dr. Marchant graduated from Crosby High School in Waterbury, Conn. with the Class of 1952, Colgate University in Hamilton, NY in 1956 and New York Medical College in 1962. 

He served both his medical internship and his one year OB-GYN residency at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY from 1962-1964 and then served with the US Air Force for two years as the general medical officer at the former Pease Air Force Base in Newington until 1966. He was the recipient of the Air Force Commendation Medal.

From 1966-1968 he spent his two year OB-GYN residency at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn., and from 1968 until his retirement in 1997 he practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Portsmouth.

He was a member of the Portsmouth Medical Society, New Hampshire Medical Society, and the American College OB-GYN. He was also a member of the Portsmouth Yacht Club and loved sailing the coast of New England for many years with family and friends.

He shared 52 years of marriage with his wife Marilyn (Palmer) Marchant. 

In addition to his wife, he leaves his son, Peter Marchant and his wife Kristine of Canton, Mass., his daughter, Susan Flagg and her husband Chris of North Hampton, grandsons Ryan and Robert Flagg, brother and sister in law, Steve and Marsha Palmer and nephews Scott and Adam Palmer all of York, ME. 

Visiting hours will be held from 5-7 P.M. Friday, November 22, 2013 at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Friends are respectfully invited. Services will be private. The family requests that flowers please be omitted and suggests in lieu of flowers on line donations may be made in memory of Dr. Robert Marchant to MGH Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at giving.massgeneral.org or donations may be made payable to Massachusetts General Hospital and mailed to MGH Pediatric Hematology and Oncology in memory of Dr. Robert Marchant c/o MGH Development Office, 100 Cambridge Street, Suite 1310, Boston, MA 01224-2548.
