4th ANNUAL SUMMER KICKOFF FOR A CAUSE at RONS LANDING

4th ANNUAL SUMMER KICKOFF FOR A CAUSE

We will be open on Tuesday evenings for the Summer at 4:00PM starting June 17th. Please join us Tuesday night June 17th for a special evening of Great Food, Fun and Entertainment as we kickoff the Summer season and help benefit a great organization in the process.

This Year's Cause: ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION,
MASSACHUSETTS/NEW HAMPSHIRE CHAPTER

(A Tribute to my Dad, Bob Boucher, Sr.)

As many of you know, my father (who is now 92 years old) used to work here at the restaurant. He performed general maintenance and did a lot of other odd jobs that no one else else cared to do (but needed to get done). He worked tirelessly about 4 hours a day, five days a week.

One day, about eight years ago, when he arrived shortly after 7 am for his "normal shift", my father entered the wrong 4 digit code into the alarm system and set off the burglar alarm. The Hampton Police arrived shortly thereafter and questioned him about what he was doing on the property. While he was explaining himself to the policeman, our chef arrived and was able to vouch for my dad and turn off the alarm.

We all thought this was a pretty funny story. Imagine an 84 year old burglar on the loose in Hampton!

Like I said, we all thought this was funny until...the next day.
My father entered the wrong code again (a 4 digit code he had successfully entered every day he worked for 12 years). Again, the police came for a visit. And so it was, the next day and the day after that. Finally, we changed the code to one he said he could remember (his birthday), but with no change in the result.

My Dad "retired" from here after the tenth day in a row of setting off the alarm. You see, he was too proud to come in later in the day, after others had already arrived. He needed to be the first one here, and he probably was embarrassed by the fact that he could no longer remember the alarm code.

Shortly after "retiring", he was diagnosed with Dementia. Today, he has virtually no short-term memory. It's odd how he can recall certain events from the 1970's and 80's or before, but can't tell you what he had for breakfast 5 minutes ago. The progression of the disease has been very slow, and we do not believe that he has Alzheimer's (the most common form of Dementia). He still recognizes all of his children's voices over the telephone, without us identifying ourselves to him. When recently asked (by a healthcare provider) who the President of the United States was, he promptly replied "Ronald Reagan". How ironic?

Despite the challenges, he has maintained his terrific sense of humor, his happy-go-lucky attitude and his love of music. His overall physical health is, otherwise, AMAZING. He still lives at home with my Mom.

Because of this, we've chosen the Alzheimer's Association to be this year's beneficiary of our 4th Annual Summer Kickoff for a Cause.
The Alzheimer's Association provides support for individuals and families dealing with all aspects of Dementia and Alzheimer's 24/7/365. In addition, they help fund the research which will someday find a cure. Visit alz.org/
