INAUGURAL CLASS OF GRANITE LEADERS PROGRAM GRADUATES

Graduates of homeless-and-formerly-homeless leadership program set their sights on improving the quality of life in communities across New Hampshire.

MANCHESTER, NH – On April 23, 2014 at Southern New Hampshire University, sixteen graduates from the inaugural class of Granite Leaders, a program of the NH Coalition to End Homelessness, were recognized for completing a six-month leadership training program.  Graduates of the program now set their sights on improving the quality of life in communities across New Hampshire.

During the six-month program, participants received training on a number of topics, which included learning about best practices on working with policymakers, learning how to raise awareness about an issue through grassroots organizing and learning about effective techniques for public speaking.

“The passion and energy among this group of leaders is reflected in the many successes that they have already achieved,” said Cathy Kuhn, Ph.D., Director of the NH Coalition to End Homelessness.  “Since our first training session last November, these exceptional leaders have had their voices heard on a wide range of issues and in a number of different ways.”

One participant that utilized the skills he gained was Leonard Constant, who raised awareness about homelessness as an in-studio guest on NH Public Radio’s “The Exchange” in January of 2014. "Granite Leaders has given me the confidence to let my voice be heard and has opened my eyes to the possibilities that are available to get involved in a cause,” said Constant, a 2014 Granite Leaders Graduate.

The Granite Leaders program, which received financial support from the New Hampshire Housing and Finance Authority and the Bank of New Hampshire, will be recruiting participants and sponsors for the next participating class, which will begin in November of 2014.
