UPDATE: Minor Fuel Spill in Hampton River

A spill near the state pier prompted fire department and Coast Guard response Thursday morning, although officials don't believe the issue is severe.

A minor fuel spill near 1 Ocean Blvd. Thursday morning prompted quick response from area safety officials to mitigate the spill's spread into Hampton River.

Hampton Fire Capt. Justin Cutting said the department was alerted of a fuel spill between the state pier and at 9:09 a.m. Thursday after residents reported seeing rainwater wash a sheen of fuel down the roadway, onto the boat ramp and into the water.

Cutting said the wet roadway and rain made it difficult to determine how much fuel was spilled, although he said he "would categorize it as a minor spill" and said it didn't "warrant any major cleanup measures."

No cause has yet to be determined, although the Coast Guard took over the investigation before the fire department cleared the scene at about 10:46 a.m.

The Coast Guard couldn't be reached for comment.

Cutting said his department has received several different reports about possible causes of the spill.

"A number of different folks in the area reported that it came from somebody's boat when it was taken out of the water," he said. "We've also heard that some thought it was from a vehicle that hauled a boat out of the water. Others thought it already existed and the rain exasperated it and made it show up so people could see it."

The state's Department of Environmental Services has been contacted.

Cutting said his department had blocked off storm drains in the area and performed other preventative steps at the request of NHDES before clearing the scene.
