Hit-and-Run Suspect Due in Court This Month

A bicyclist was seriously injured.

A North Hampton man who police said struck an Exeter bicyclist with his sport utility vehicle then took off is due in court later this month.

John Fordham, 69, of 110 Atlantic Ave., was charged in connection with the hit-and-run, . He turned himself in to police after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The bicyclist suffered a broken back and serious head injuries but is recovering, police said.

Fordham is due in Exeter District Court Jan. 26 for a hearing. He remains free on bail.

Police said Fordham was at Merrill's Place — an Exeter restaurant and bar — before the incident. The New Hampshire Liquor Enforcement Agency is investigating the bar to determine if Fordham had been overserved alcohol there.

Fordham was charged with conduct after an accident, a felony that carries up to seven years in state prison.

He hired Harry Starbranch, a Portsmouth-based attorney, who requested materials – including witness statements and the original arrest report – from .
