Excavator Removed From Hampton Harbor

A submerged piece of heavy machinery was successfully hauled out of the water Wednesday morning.

Crews were are able to remove a sunken excavator from Hampton Harbor Wednesday morning one day after last-minute complications delayed both the machinery's removal and the reopening of the commercial port.

The excavator had fallen off a barge late Thursday after the barge started to take on water, listed and struck part of the Neil Underwood Memorial Bridge while operators attempted to beach the barge to prevent it from sinking.

The center of the entrance to the harbor was closed as a precaution until a crane barge from Boston, Mass., was able to haul the excavator from the water by 10 a.m. Wednesday.
